What a Steel Fabricator Needs From Your Drawings Before Work Starts

A fabricator can only price and manufacture what has been clearly defined. A sketch may be enough for an early conversation, but production requires controlled dimensions, materials, details and acceptance criteria. Better information at the start means fewer assumptions, clearer quotations and less risk of delay.

Issue the complete drawing set

Send the general arrangement, relevant details, schedules and specifications together. A component drawing can be misleading without the plan that shows orientation, interfaces and surrounding structure. Mark the current revision and withdraw superseded files.

If information is still preliminary, label it clearly as not for manufacture. That allows budget pricing without creating the impression that fabrication can begin.

Define material and section accurately

State the full section or plate description, material grade and any traceability requirements. For profiles, that includes the section type and complete designation. For plate work, include thickness, grade and any specific surface or testing requirement.

Dimension from stable references

Overall dimensions are essential, but so are the datums from which holes, plates and cut-outs are located. Avoid chains of dimensions that can accumulate tolerance. Indicate which faces, centrelines or edges control fit.

  • Overall length, width and height.
  • Hole diameters, centres and orientation.
  • Plate sizes and thicknesses.
  • Angles, cambers or non-square cuts.
  • Interfaces with existing or third-party components.

Show connection and welding requirements

Connection design should identify plates, bolts, weld sizes and weld locations. State whether welds are continuous or intermittent and whether any surfaces must remain clear. If connection design is not complete, resolve it with the structural engineer before manufacture.

State tolerances and critical fit

General fabrication tolerances may be suitable for many components, but close-fitting assemblies, machined interfaces and site constraints can require specific control. Highlight critical dimensions rather than applying unnecessarily tight tolerances to the entire item.

Confirm finish and post-fabrication treatment

Specify whether the item is self-colour, primed, painted, galvanised or prepared for another coating system. Galvanising can affect venting, drainage, distortion risk and hole clearances, so it should be considered at design stage rather than added after fabrication.

Include quantity, programme and delivery information

Quantity affects nesting, setup and material purchasing. Provide the required delivery date, delivery address, access restrictions and any need for staged deliveries. If the programme depends on approval drawings, state who will approve them and allow time for that review.

Before releasing for manufacture

  • All design queries closed.
  • Latest revision formally identified.
  • Materials and finishes confirmed.
  • Critical dimensions checked against site conditions.
  • Delivery and lifting arrangements understood.
