From DXF to Finished Component: How Pratleys Produces Profile Plates

Profile cutting converts a drawing into a repeatable steel component, but the cutting machine is only one part of the process. Material grade, drawing quality, tolerances, nesting, heat input, finishing and inspection all affect whether the finished plate is right for its application.

Begin with controlled design information

A DXF file provides useful cutting geometry, while a dimensioned PDF or production drawing explains what that geometry means. The drawing should identify part name, quantity, material, thickness, critical dimensions, hole requirements, tolerances and revision.

Where a DXF and drawing disagree, fabrication should pause until the discrepancy is resolved. File names alone are not reliable revision control.

Confirm material and thickness

The same profile cut from a different grade or thickness is a different component. The specification should also identify any requirement for material certification, rolling direction, surface condition or traceability.

Prepare and check the cutting file

Before nesting, geometry is checked for open contours, duplicate lines, very small features and details that cannot be cut reliably at the selected thickness. Hole size and edge-quality requirements may mean that some features should be drilled or machined after profiling rather than cut directly.

Nest parts efficiently

Nesting places components on the parent plate to use material efficiently while preserving suitable spacing and cutting sequence. Quantity, component shape, plate availability and the behaviour of the material under heat all influence the layout.

Cut with the process set for the job

Machine settings are selected for material and thickness. Piercing position, lead-ins, cut direction and sequence help manage edge quality and distortion. Thick or intricate components may need a different approach from simple thin plate.

Dress and inspect the finished profile

After cutting, parts are identified, separated and inspected. Slag, sharp edges or local imperfections are addressed to the agreed finish. Critical dimensions and features are checked against the drawing, and components can then move to drilling, welding, coating or dispatch as required.
